Hypertrophe Kardiomyopathie ist eine genetische Krankheit die Katzen, Hunde, Schweine und Menschen gleichermaßen betrifft. Wie es über die Generationen weitergegeben wird ist noch nicht klar enthüllt. Seit den 1970gern ist bekannt, daß HCM der häufigste Grund für Herzversagen, Thromben und plötzlichem Herztod bei Katzen ist. Eine bedeutende Studie über Maine Coon Katzen wurde in den USA durchgeführt die aufzeigt, dass HCM bei diesen Katzen vererbt zu werden scheint durch ein einziges dominantes Gen.
Ein normales Herz
Ein Herz diagnostiziert mit HCM
HCM wird charakterisiert durch eine anomale Verdickung des Herzmuskels. Hauptsächlich in Höhe der linken Herzseite. Aufgrund der Verdickung des Herzmuskels verliert das Herz an Elastizität wodurch sich das Herz weniger leicht füllen kann. Eine zweite Konsequenz ist, das immer weniger Platz für das Blut in der linken Herzkammer bleibt, was zu einer geringeren Menge Blut führt als normal die bei jedem Herzschlag durchgepumpt werden kann. Der dicke Herzmuskel kann Turbulenzen im Blutfluss erzeugen oder die Undichte einiger Klappen. Dies kann dann ein Herzgeräusch verursachen das der Tierarzt mit dem Stethoskop hören kann.
Katzen mit HCM können Flüssigkeit ansammeln in den oder um die Lungen herum was zu erschwerter Atmung führen kann. Andere Tiere scheinen keine Anzeichen zu zeigen und fallen plötzlich tot um, meist wegen einer plötzlichen sehr schweren Rhythmusstörung. Manche Katzen entwickeln Blutgerinnsel (Blutklumpen) die eine Lähmung der Hinterbeine verursachen können.
HCM ist kein angeborener Defekt sondern eine Krankheit die sich sehr langsam entwickelt. Katzen die HCM haben zeigen oft keine Anzeichen bevor sie 6 Monate alt sind und es kann mehrere Jahre dauern bevor man eine HCM diagnostizieren kann. Deshalb müssen Sie einen Fachmann haben, der eine echocardiographische Untersuchung zu mehreren Terminen durchführt.
Gibt es eine Heilung?
Leider kann HCM nicht geheilt werden, aber betroffene Katzen können medikamentös behandelt werden. Abhängig von den Symptomen des Tieres und dem Zustand des Herzens werden Beta-Blocker und/oder ACE-Hemmer eingesetzt.
Wie wird ein HCM Test durchgeführt?
Die Katze wird mit einem Ultraschallgerät untersucht (echocardiographscher Test) bei dem man sehen kann ob irgendwelche abnormal verdickte Stellen vorhanden sind, wie das Herz schlägt und wie das Blut fließt.
Die Untersuchung ist schmerzfrei und wird für gewöhnlich von der Katze gut toleriert. Falls sich die Katze unwohl fühlt wäre es besser ihr eine leichte Narkose (Injektion) zu verabreichen da es wichtig ist, dass sich die Katze ruhig verhält auf dem Untersuchungstisch.
Manchmal ist es nötig die Katze ein wenig zu rasieren, nur an dem Punkt wo die Untersuchung stattfindet. Bei anderen Katzen funktioniert es sehr gut wenn man nur das Fell teilt ohne rasieren zu müssen. Um einen guten Kontakt zur Haut der Katze herzustellen und ein gutes Bild zu bekommen wird auf diesem Bereich ein Gel aufgetragen. Die Untersuchung dauert 30-40 Minuten.
Empfehlungen für Tests:
Der erste HCM-Test sollte erfolgen im Alter von einem Jahr und bevor die Katze zur Zucht eingesetzt wird. Weitere Tests sind jährlich empfohlen bis die Katze 3 Jahre alt ist. Danach wird ein Test im Alter von 5 Jahren empfohlen. Wenn es sich um Maine Coons handelt die eine Bedeutung für den gesamten Zuchtstamm bekommen haben oder eine in einer besonders risikoreichen Situation (sei es ein unklares Ergebnis oder ein naher Verwandter wurde mit HCM diagnostiziert) wäre es gescheit auch später noch zu testen, zum Beispiel mit 8 Jahren. Bitte beachten Sie, dass dies nur ein allgemeiner Standpunkt ist der im Einzelfall individuell betrachtet werden muss.
Empfehlungen für Zucht:

Normales Herz:
Katzen mit einem normalen Herz entsprechend einem Test und ohne nahe Verwandte* mit positiver HCM Diagnose können natürlich zur Zucht eingesetzt werden hinsichtlich HCM.
Diagnostiziert mit HCM:
Katzen bei denen HCM diagnostiziert wurde, gleich welchen Grades sollten nicht zur Zucht eingesetzt werden.
